The skin is the largest organ of the body, the most visible and acts as our interface with the world. Healthy, normal-looking skin is essential for an individual’s physical and mental well-being. It is the patient’s “visible self.” One’s body image is of fundamental importance in the development of personality and interpersonal relationships.

Skin diseases have the potential to affect an individual’s quality of life to a great extent. Skin diseases can affect the patient’s life in various aspects; it can affect their relationships, emotional health and self-esteem. As a dermatologist, it is my passion to make a difference in people’s lives by treating  various forms of skin disease.

Dr Jacques van Wyk is a dermatologist based in Paarl in the Cape Winelands district of the Western Cape, South Africa. He is currently working in private practice as well as doing sessional work in the public sector at Paarl Provincial Hospital.
